Show what?

Showing work should mean showing what I’m doing in the context of my portfolio, not just some pictures here and there.  So, no image today of my foliage photograph from a couple days ago.  Not until it’s done, anyway.

This weekend I re-laid out my website, .  Just the layout, not the content.  Not done yet, but at least I ironed out the non-functioning part of its archaic page structure.  This infrastructure and background work is good.  And necessary.  It feels good, because it’s progress.

So, working on that, and on some images from after returning from Italy.  Like the foliage image.  When it’s done, I’ll print it AND add it to my portfolio AND post it here AND add it to my website which will cause me to tie its loose ends together and get it to a decent state worth showing.  (It wouldn’t be good to show work on a website that’s itself not worth showing.)

Tonight, though, is packing for almost a week the yurt.  There’s lots to do there before winter hits.  The yurt had its first taste of it yesterday, a solid foot of wet snow.  It’s melting now, but it’ll be a slog to get it all supplied and ready for the permanent snow of the winter.

The day after I return, it’s off to Vancouver B.C. with friends.

So, it might be a week or so before I post again.  Out of touch but lovin’ it.

Working on Work for Showing

First, an update to yesterday’s post:

Below is another shot of the quantum tunnel I take from my house to my morning workouts and back. Tunnels, golf courses, country clubs, fountains in ponds, bike paths, salmon streams, swimming pools, nature preserves, 180′ Doug Fir trees that grow everywhere like weeds, owls that attack humans, … All within a short walk. Yes, it’s been a good place to live for the past 28 years.

Work to show:

Also from yesterday, my 2-hour escape with camera. Worth printing, I think, see below for partially processed image. “Could be good.”  If it is good, it will be my first Work To Show since starting this blog.

Two more trips in October, Winthrop then Vancouver.  After them, no more travel for the rest of the fall season.  Time finally for:  Images!  Creative projects!  Printing!  Work to show!

Left the house, due to a “certain necessity”.  Carried the camera, good outlook:  An eye, a brain, and energy (see blog of 10/16/17.)  Very cool shots of autumn foliage.  And freeways, of all things.

Show, show show my work.  Hmm.  Too good a time today capturing, not enough time left to work on them for showing.  Except this one shot, on my way to my morning workout.  Thanks, Lightroom Mobile.

Back Home

I should Show My Work here.  (Show Your Work, a great book, by Austin Kleon).

Well, right now My Work consists of trying to insert bits of creativity into each day, with this image below being one bit.

Yes, I soon will have Creative Projects, like I’ve had before.  I can’t wait.  They will result in Work To Show.

But right now, this new retirement gig has kept me pretty busy.  I’ve been pushing through a bow wave of things that just needed to happen:  Yurt, Michigan, yurt, Texas, yurt, solar eclipse, yurt, Italy, yurt, Michigan again, yurt.

Projects will begin … soon, very soon.  As I said in an earlier post, watch it here, as it happens, when it happens.

Below – just a snapshot in front of my house, on the way back from my morning swim.  Summer’s over, Fall is here.

Life’s Luck

Last blog entry until Seattle.

Ain’t this something: One person can have all the bad luck in the world (genes, health, finances, socializations, etc) and still have a good outlook on life. Yet, a different person can receive only life’s golden gifts, all the while resenting everything and everyone?

What’s inside counts for more than what’s external.

Color Today

There was color today. Yes, really. Even on a rainy October day in central Michigan.

This is a snapshot. I’ll keep taking snapshots, because there’s often something in them that’s ‘good’. So in this one, did I find the thing that’s ‘good’?

I need to develop an eye for taking fine photos. And, I need an eye to bring out what’s fine in them once taken. Yes, two eyes.

And a brain. I need to amplify the creativity in my brain, to create printed fine art images.

A brain to recognize or create the composition, an eye to make the photograph, and another different eye to bring out what’s fine about it in ‘post’.

Oh, and energy to keep it all flowing.

Yes, brain, eye, another eye, and with energy flowing through it all. My Plan.

Oh look at how she listens
She says nothing of what she thinks
She just goes stumbling through her memories
Staring out on to Grey Street

She thinks, “Hey,
How did I come to this?
I dream myself a thousand times around the world,
But I can’t get out of this place”

There’s an emptiness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together – to grey
And it breaks her heart

How she wishes it was different
She prays to God most every night
And though she swears it doesn’t listen
There’s still a hope in her it might

She says, “I pray
But they fall on deaf ears,
Am I supposed to take it on myself?
To get out of this place”

There’s loneliness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It feels like cold blue ice in her heart
When all the colors mix together – to grey
And it breaks her heart

There’s a stranger speaks outside her door
Says take what you can from your dreams
Make them as real as anything
It’d take the work out of the courage

But she says, “Please
There’s a crazy man that’s creeping outside my door,
I live on the corner of Grey Street and the end of the world”

There’s an emptiness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It’s more like cold blue ice in her heart

She feels like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her using colors bold and bright
But all the colors mix together – to grey
And it breaks her heart
It breaks her heart
To grey

Getting Real

Here I am doing this stuff, and I look at others’ stuff and it’s amazing.  Oh well, I don’t care.  My stuff from today is below, 3 images.

Yes, traveling here to give myself to my sister is a selfless thing, I know.  And that’s good.  Today was another day dedicated to her.  She needs more than I can give.  But, I just give what I can.  One day I’ll be as needy as her.  We all will be.

As for myself, a walk yesterday for groceries and a walk last night due to jet lag gave 3 images.  Sitting today outside her doctor’s office for 2 hours let me use Photoshop on an iPad for the first time.  Neat results, my baby steps are below.

Updated stuff for this blog, About  and Contacts.  Learning WordPress.  Getting used to the idea of blogging.

Here’s why the blog:  I’m boring but smart, need to be more creative.  I know that making something each day may be simple, but for sure it’s not easy.  So this can be my blog about process, progress, and results.  This blog itself may become creative, part of the process.

Today – no photography whatsoever, and nothing else creative.  Helped my sister all day, because she desperately needs my help.  That’s my excuse as well as a darned good reason.
